  • St. Basil the Great
    Early in life, St. Basil distinguished himself as a scholar. His erudition and sanctity later layed a foundation for him, as he was elected bishop of Caesara. Through his writings and preaching, he helped preserve the orthodoxy of the faith. Because of this, he has been declared a Doctor of the Church.
  • St. Benedict
    Born around 480, St. Benedict is not only the father of the Benedictine order, he is also considered to be the founder of western monasticism. He wrote the "Rule of St. Benedict" which became the norm for monasticism and he founded a dozen monasteries himself, including the famous Monte Cassino, where he lived.
