  • St. Cornelius
    Elected Pope after the terrible persecution of Decius, St. Cornelius addressed the Christians who had lapsed during the persecution, stressing both the need for penance and the possibility of pardon. Pope St. Cornelius died a martyr himself, during the reign of Emperor Gallus in the mid-third century.
  • St. Polycarp of Smyrna
    St. Polycarp of Smyrna was converted to Christianity in 80 A.D. by St. John. He was appointed Bishop of Smyrna and became an influential leader in the church. St. Polycarp was condemned to burn at the stake after refusing to burn incense to the Roman Emperor. The flames did not harm him, so he was stabbed to death.
